University of Santo Tomas (UST) UST is the oldest existing university in Asia founded on April 28, 1611 and in terms of student population, the largest Catholic university in the world located in one campus. It was first called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario and later named Colegio de Santo Tomas in memory of the foremost Dominican Theologian, Saint Thomas Aquinas. Owing to its pursuit of its mission to form young men and women, UST has produced distinguished alumni of national integrity and has played a pivotal role in the amelioration of the socio-political, religious, and economic condition of the country. In the religious-ecclesiastical field, it is always noteworthy to mention that a great number of the bishops of the Philippine Catholic Church were nourished with the University's Thomistic philosophy of education while from Her bosom came professionals who are now esteemed educators, respected journalists, much sought after artists, competent engineers, pharmacists, architects, doctors and other allied health professionals, and athletes who bring honor and fame to the country. Competence, Compassion, and Commitment are the hallmarks that make the Thomasians stand out as they take the challenge to live up to the legacy bequeathed on them by the University of Santo Tomas, under the inspiration of ardent St. Dominic, who preached the Word with compassion, and St. Thomas who devoted his life in seeking the “truth in love” or “veritas in caritate”. The University affirms its role in the formation of men and women to become competent and compassionate professionals committed to the service of the Church, the nation and the global community. By the year 2011, UST envisions itself as a center of excellence in various programs of teaching, an acknowledged expert in key areas of research in the pure and applied sciences, a leader in community/extension services, and the Center of Contextualized Theology in Asia. It also envisions for itself an extended physical presence beyond Manila , and more functional networking mechanism with other universities/institutions. Centro Escolar University (CEU) CEU is a private, stocked, non-sectarian institution of higher learning founded in 1907. It has since risen to be one of the top providers of quality professionals in the practice of Dentistry, Optometry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Technology, Nutrition, Social Work, Education and Accountancy. The University has also produced quality practitioners in the fields of Tourism, Business and Management, Information Technology, Mass Communications, Secretarial, Hotel and Restaurant Management and various arts and sciences. These courses were designed to equip students for local and international employment and practice, guided by the philosophy of knowledge and virtue, and embodied in the mission of providing “quality education that ensures total development of its members” in a caring environment. The successful achievement of its mission is indicated by the laudable performance of its graduates in the board examinations in terms of passing percentage and board placers and in the placement of its graduates. Strong leadership, a distinct organizational culture, highly qualified team of managers-educators, faculty and support staff and well-defined academic and support processes and financial stability ensure the University's quality performance. The 1,060-manpower complement has evolved into a learning community to meet the challenges of changing needs and expectations of various stakeholders. This is shown in their commitment to implement/support several continuous improvement schemes. These include levels 2 and 3 accreditation under PACUCOA and PAASCU for almost all programs at CEU Manila and Malolos, internal and external quality audits and customer feedback under its ISO 9001 certification, and quality tools such as 5S, a suggestion scheme, quality circles and a recognition scheme.
